Nubia

Ebony is a strong, rich, dense, bold, powerful and precious dark wood deeply rooted in the trade of ancient Nubia. Also known as the Kingdom of Kush, ancient Nubia was one of the most technologically advanced, socially and culturally sophisticated civilizations that the ancient world had ever witnessed. It was a centre of culture and military might in Africa but one whose history was largely dismissed and ignored by scholars until recent times.

Ancient Nubia, whose land stretched 1200 miles from the south of Egypt beyond the first cataract of the River Nile southward to the confluence of the Blue and White Niles in modern day Omdurman, traded in the most precious luxury commodities of ancient times. Gold, carnelian, ivory, incense and ebony were traded with neighbouring Egypt and beyond.

The ebony collection named after ancient Nubia pays homage to this land of majestic power, unbridled innovation and luxurious elegance, one whose history I would like to acknowledge and remember. Ebony, like Nubia, exudes an aura of strength, resilience and enduring beauty. Its rich dark hues are the epitome of elegance and sophistication, while its dense and durable composition embodies the very essence of power.

A tribute to both the land and this precious wood that inspire us to greatness, each piece in this collection has been carved along the same banks of the Nile where ancient Nubians once traded and thrived. Hand carved by a father and son with whom my mama and I had the privilege to work for a lifetime, this limited collection is one that is very dear to me as it carries the strong and beautiful energy of the very hands of the artisans that created them.

With the Nubia Collection, I invite you to discover the allure of ebony and the majesty of Nubia and hope that these pieces transport you to a world of luxury and refinement, where power and elegance are intertwined in perfect and soulful harmony.
