Hilal Earrings

The crescent moon motif in jewellery has been used for centuries across many cultures and civilizations, often glorifying the feminine moon goddess. These earrings pay homage to and revisit the heritage of a culture I was privileged to grow up in. Hilal is the Arabic word for crescent, and these earrings reflect an integral part of Sudanese customs and traditions. Possibly originating from ancient Nubia, crescent-shaped earrings known as fidwa are traditionally used during wedding celebrations.
